Very nice
I've always been a fan of such things....the Germans did a lot of these sort of bikes in the seventies....before the dreaded TUV killed them off.

I like that BMW announces the R18 in advance whereas Triumph will mention the Thunderbird 1900 day of production. lol
Anyway, is radiator an option??

Yes I saw this video today at my local Triumph shop, have to say it has got my attention, hopefully a tourer version will be available too.

Maybe it's time for a BMW R18 forum mate?

I've been taking a closer look at this machine.
Generally I like it but I have the same stylistic problem with it that I do with Triumph's Bobber.
Looks good till you get to the rear end...then there's that silly wheel stuck out the back as an an afterthought.
Just me being old I suppose but in the seventies the essence of a BMW chop was that it was a stubby thing...and the rear tyre width was limited by the available clearance between tyre and shaft drive.
Oh well.

Yes I guess so, I'm not a bobber fan either but I like a lot of the detail on this, very clean lines with all the usual bits hidded, obviously it needs all the street legal stuff to be fitted but like I said a cruiser/tourer version would be very tempting. It has that individual look which is what drew me to the Bird back in 2010.

I wonder how the R18 hp and torque stacks up to a slightly modified 1700 (BC airbox removal kit and dyno map)??

I dunno, Bedouin.... there is such a thing as too big. Our 1600/1700 T-Birds are on large side, too heavy for some things and already a bit much for a daily ride.
When US regulations get done with it, that exhaust note will be gone along with those mufflers. Actual product here in the States is bound to be very different than this prototype.
Too bad Triumph didn't put more effort into cracking the Harley market here, but it's a tough one. Indian is making progress, but hardcore Harley types won't accept anything that doesn't come from HD. On the other hand, next generation appears to have zero brand loyalty.

Never thought we'd be set adrift like this.

Knowing how BMW do things I would imagine that it would be right up there, especially the torque. For me it wouldn't matter, I will always keep my Tbird but something like this might tempt me, so long as getting it street legal doesn't spoil it and they bring out a cruiser version.

Don't count on that. I had the hots for one of those early 2000s R1200CL's. Most BMW fans dislike (hate?) the bike, but I thought it to be very cool, especially the chromed out CLCs'
I was instantly cured with a very short test ride; it was horribly under-powered, even for a very docile rider like myself. I tested it solo on flat terrain and was soooo disappointed. Couldn't imagine how sluggish it'd be in the mountains with a passenger!
My only point is that just cause its a BMW, take nothing for granted. Well, maybe they learned something from that short lived model.

I guess we will have to wait and see, I was probably expressing my thoughts from my old connection with BMW motor cars. In any case it's a cool concept, and I still have a keen interest in air cooling with all it's simplicity.

Yes, a tourer version would be interesting.
My only issue with this is the footpeg position.
Seems a bit awkward.

An R18 forum eh? Hmmm

Nah, not until I see the full range AND if anything takes my fancy.
I tour a lot so a touring version would be what I would be interested in.
It would also have to be compatible with a sidecar as I wish to make my dog Harry famous.

Yes I would like to see a cruiser version that hopefully retains the styling, I've never owned a BMW motorcycle and have always had am interest in the boxers, especially now an 1800 My Bird would stay though, couldn't turn up to a Flocking on a Beemer with a broom stick up my arse!!

This version looks nice, plenty of sports tourers have the pegs in the normal position, another concern for me may be heat from the cylinders, but as has been said , we wait for the production models.

How would you get your feet to them?? Maybe with their old 4 cylinder (K75/K100) motor?
I agree, it's cool looking, but these old knees need to move around a bit more than that'd allow.

IMO if introduced, it wouldn't last long.
Cruisers are for old guys, and old guys need to move our legs about to thwart rigor mortise!

I can't imagine grilling legs over air-cooled jugs. Anyway it's BMW's answer to the latest cruiser engine. ...doesn't even come close to the liquid cooled 2500 rocket, or ole Thunderbird

As Kim pointed out they are probably oil cooled, so may be ok, I have to say that I've not heard of BM riders complaining about heat

Probably won't come close to the Rocket, but you have to like a bike before buying and I doubt the R3 will do it for me and it's hard to compare to the Bird yet as we have not seen any HP/Torque figures , I think it will easily top 1600 and most likely the 1700. Whatever it turns out to be it will hopefully put pressure back on Triumph and other brands to get back into the big cruiser market.

Right, Oil/Air cooled...I'm guessing considerable heat dissipates from the cylinders. Anyway an interesting look.

You would think Triumph bridges the gap between 1200 and 2500 cc.

Yes I would assume considerable heat, looks like small heat shields in that photo, that could be a negative for our summer but then at least it isn't fan forced.

I am sure we will see another large twin from Triumph, they do themselves an injustice by not "leaking' some info over time as many would probably wait, but many have not. We are seeing an increasing number of our Flockers turning to V twins as they become ready for something new.

Yes, I haven't had a chance to compare engine weights but I doubt the big BM crankcase will see it be a lightweight, so maybe performance will be similar.

I note that a reverse gear is an option, so it may be come a sidecar favourite

Remember Rich, BMW's are for people who are used to a steering wheel, not a bar.

Of cause they expect a reverse gear, or they would only be able to drive forward. Pushing back is not an option.
